Indigenous People

1june,2011,I attended the class of Flexible Learning. Kate presented the topic of Indigenous People.
Indigenous People are those who inhabited a country or a geographical region at the time when people of different cultures or ethnic origin arrived. The new arrivals later become dominant through Conquest, Occupation, Settlement or other means.
(1)Self- Indentification as indigenous people at the individual level and accepted by the community as their member.
(2)Distinct social, economic or political systems.
(3)From non-dominant group of society.

It is estimated that these are more than 370 million indigenous people spread across 70 countries worldwide. Practicing unique tradition they retain social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. These people are the holders of unique languages, Knowledge systems and beliefs and possess invaluable knowledge of practices for the sustainable management of natural resources.
We covered in this class the history of coloization in Nz and looked at why the indigenous people of NZ have a worse health outcome, low standard of living, low level of education, low socio- economic standards than non- indigenous people. She relate the topic with the flexible learning for the indigenous people. In NZ, she gives the example of Maori people who comes in this category in the past time. The main focus is given on four aspects- Spiritual, Physical, Cognitive, Family and social . Like entry requirements, Point of contact and support,Providing course outline, Course Selection, Learning environment, Resources , Scholarships, Informal support system for students away from family,Privacy and confidentiality, Legal Status, Teaching and Learning Environment.
For Building the good relationships teacher should strat cross programme in classes, Learning as a collective activity like work in groups, Pathway like online learning, People who live far aways Geographically, linking them with Moodle and Comments on Disussion Board, Share food with other like family setting.,Building new relationships through knowledge like collaboration, learning in parternship etc.
I observe some Bachelor of Nursing Programme classes presentations their i saw two students were from Moari culture they were also giving the presentations with others students, all were working together and done work very well. But i cannot see the differences between the students due to the other culture, all were sharing their views with other students and even all were sit together in a group. This shows that now these days, due to the education students and other people become concious that all are equal. Even indigenous people will feel freedom in sharing their ideas with other people which will helpful for the future of the country and countrymen.

Flexible Learning

Flexible Learning

I had attended two classes for teaching observation's on 29th and 30th april of Foundation studies. These classes were Time Management and ESOL
.
Methods and by the Teacher.Strateby Used

In the Time Management class, there were 24 students. The room was appropriate for study.and the sitting arrangement was according to the situation. All the students were sit in the three groups. Lighting and heating system was good. First of all teacher wrote the topic of stress on the whiteboard. She asks some questions to related to the stress topic. Then she gave the topic  Effect of Stress to the students. Students discuss the topic with each other in their groups. In the mean time teacher asks the questions regarding the topic from the students to envolve them into the study. There was diversity of age, gender, language and even nationality among the students. She understood the diversity and taught them according to their level. She used whiteboard to write everything. She even tried to attract the attention of that students also, who were not taking interest in the study. She asking the students to gave examples from their real life and then wrote all the key points on the whiteboard to encourage the students for more answers.
In the ESOL class, there was 17 students in the class. The sitting arrangement was in U-shape and lighting and heating was proper. The teacher used different methods of teaching according to the topics. She uses whiteboard to write the topic  and then she gave sheets for taking test. In her class, there was very diversity among the students. there was diversity of age, languages, nationality also because students were from different countries and english was second language for them. But even she taught them all basics things very well so that they could understand every things. She used powerpoints, slides, whiteboard, worksheets according to topics. In this way she used different flexible methods of teaching according to the situation. She gave stress to teach the difficult words meaning and even if there was any problem to the student she gave examples from the real- life. She encourages the students to read the paragraphs to check their vocabulary.

In different classes, I saw teachers were very flexible during their teaching  and they used different styles and methods according to the topics. So that students can easily understand and remember the topics.

Why the Methods were flexible?

These teacher used different methods according to their topics so that students can easy understand the topic. There was a lot of diversity among the students. There was diversity in age, gender, languages, nationality , culture and even countries also. But the teacher was fully prepared to teach them according to their levels. So that students took interest in the topics and their teaching methods. Different methods like whiteboard, powerpoint, slides, worksheets were used to teach them. Teacher used the flexible VARK methods means audio, video, reading and kinesthetic  to teach them in a better way.

What I Learnt from them?

I learnt how i can use different methods while teaching different subjects and topics. Teacher should prepare before going to the classroom, about the topic and even the diversity of the students. I observed two different classes, in these classes different teacher's were teach different topics, even in the different ways. There was flexibility in teaching methods and even teaching styles. In the first class, teacher used more whiteboard and discussion method. But in the second class, teacher was flexible and she used powerpoint, slides, whiteboard, worksheets and she gave the homework also according to their topics and subjects.I learnt that i will also use flexible methods and strategies in my future teaching and even in teaching pratice.

Reflections On The Blended Learning

Blended learning or Hybrid learning are the combination of the online or face to face approaches of learning. It is the effective comination of different modes of delievery, models of teaching and styles of learning (Procter 2003). Gilly Salmon's e-moderating model (Salmon,2000)describe a five-stage process, engaging the students with online communication technology. "There are many things that have to exist  in order to achieve the effective operation of learning via technology. One issye is to use of activities, to make students interact with each other and the E-moderator,rather than only accessing information such as handouts and presentation material."
In conversational framework , students has three types of opportunity to communicate with the students.Even teacher interact with the students and correct it if there is any misconceptions. There are some drawbacks. There is lack of attention to the management of learning and the need for learning negotiation between the students and the teacher.
Research Method offers a comination of pratical and theoretical enquiry;it is a means of generating and  proving scientific theory. There are some similarities between the Kolb's Experiential learning cycles and research methods.
"Blended learning is learning that is facilitated by the effective combination of different modes of delivery, models of teaching and styles of learning, and founded on  transparent communication amongst all parties involved with a course."

Observation of Esol class

On 31,march I went to observe a class of ESOL students.Efife Boock was the lecturer of that class. There was 11 students in the classroom. All came from different countries like China, Thailand, India etc.First of all she introduced me with the students and then introduce the topics and  wrote the material on the whiteboard .
She use different teaching  methods and styles. She know the diversity of the students so she taught them according to their level. She explain the material very well. First of all she took the test of difficult words  and dictate the words, she gave the proper empasis on the difficult words so that students can understand the words and its meanings also.
She use the powerpoints to dictate the paragraphs and encouraged the students to gave the responses. Then she gave the worksheets to the students to fill the blanks. That was about the life of Helen keller. Then she wrote the right answers on the whiteboard  and side by side she ask the answers from the students. In the end of the session she gave the homework to the students so that students can remind the classwork.
I enjoyed very much in this class and even i learn different  teaching methods and preferences. All the students were very keen to know the new things and new knowledge.Even the whole concept was very clear to the students.I make my mind to use the different methods in teaching practice.
